How to find your Day Master in Bazi (Four Pillars of Destiny)

If you’ve ever been curious about Chinese metaphysics or destiny analysis, you’ve probably come across BaZi, also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny. One of the core components of a BaZi chart is the Day Master—the "self-element" that represents you. In this article, I’ll guide you through what the Day Master is, why it matters, and how you can find yours easily.

What is the Day Master ?

In BaZi, your birth chart is made up of four pillars: Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each pillar has a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, totaling eight characters—hence the name "BaZi" (八字), which literally means "Eight Characters."

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. It represents your core self—your personality, inner strength, and the lens through which you interact with the world. Once you know your Day Master, you can begin to understand your character and how you interact with different elements and energies in your chart.

Step-by-Step: How to Find Your Day Master

Step 1: Get Your BaZi Chart

To find your Day Master, you’ll first need to generate your full BaZi chart. You can use any free online BaZi calculator.

Step 2: Look at the Day Pillar

Once the chart is generated, you’ll see four vertical columns labeled Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Focus on the Day Pillar.

Each pillar has:

  • A Heavenly Stem (top character)

  • An Earthly Branch (bottom character)

For the Day Pillar, the top character (Heavenly Stem) is your Day Master.

Step 3: Identify the Element of the Day Master

There are 10 possible Day Masters, corresponding to the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), each in Yin and Yang forms:

Day Master        Element        Polarity
甲 (Jia)        Wood        Yang
乙 (Yi)            Wood        Yin
丙 (Bing)        Fire        Yang
丁 (Ding)        Fire        Yin
戊 (Wu)        Earth        Yang
己 (Ji)        Earth        Yin
庚 (Geng)        Metal        Yang
辛 (Xin)        Metal        Yin
壬 (Ren)        Water        Yang
癸 (Gui)        Water        Yin

Example:

If your Day Stem is 丁 (Dīng), your Day Master is Yin Fire.

Why the Day Master Is Important

The Day Master is like the sun in your BaZi solar system. Everything else—your career, relationships, wealth, health—revolves around how the other elements interact with your Day Master.

Knowing your Day Master can help you:

  • Discover your strengths and weaknesses

  • Understand your elemental balance

  • Choose suitable career paths, partners, and even timing for major decisions
